The SHEN Athletics Carnival is one of the biggest homeschool sporting events in New South Wales — a full day of track and field where home-educated children of all ages come together to run, jump, throw and cheer each other on. Hosted each year by the Sydney Home Education Network, it's a joyful, welcoming day built entirely around homeschooling families.
Homeschooling children aged 5 and up, and their families. Whether your child is sporty or simply loves being part of the action, there's a place for them.
Yes. You don't need to be an athlete or belong to any club — every homeschooling family is welcome, and children take part at their own level.
Children take part in classic athletics events — sprints, longer runs, long jump, discus, shot put and javelin — grouped by age. Between events there's plenty of time to rest, snack and make friends with other homeschooled kids.
Expect a big, happy, well-organised day out. Registration opens from 9:00am, with events running 10:00am to 5:00pm. Bring water, sun protection, a picnic and a camp chair — parents cheer from the sidelines while children compete in a supportive, low-pressure atmosphere.
Homeschooling sometimes carries a quiet worry about whether children get enough team spirit and friendly competition. A day like this puts that worry to rest — it's a wonderful reminder of just how large and active the NSW homeschool community really is.
Families love the sense of belonging — a whole track full of homeschoolers, all there for the same reason, cheering each other on.
